Decorator’s block

August 11, 2008

As the furnishing of our new house comes to a close, I realize I only have a few rooms left and the bedroom is next on the copping block. I have curtains up, new bedding bought, paint picked out, wall art ready to be hung but before I get to assembling any of that I must figure out furniture placement. Here’s where my joy and love of decorating comes to a close. This part I don’t do so well with. So I am hoping some of you can help.

Below is a simple diagram of how it looks now (yes, this is what I am currently using my graphic design major for). Something about all of it isn’t jiving.

We really like having the bed in between the two windows, so I’d really like to keep that the same. And the dresser is larger than most, measuring 52″ across, so that feels a little awkward where it is. Most of you will see that space to right of the bathroom door and say, “Well why not put something there?” Good suggestion! However, I neglected to show it on the diagram but that wall is level with the rest of the wall for about 32″ out, and then it cuts back about a foot to then become level with the rest of the hallway wall. Make sense? Basically, only something that is 32″ in length will be able to fit there (and unfortunately the armoire is longer than that as well). So what do you think? Should we ditch the idea of keeping the bed in between the windows for more flow? Or does it look okay the way it is? I am at a loss, really. I hate this part of decorating.

You’re kind of in the same situation as we are with our living room… stuck! I don’t love the way we have our furniture in there but there really isn’t any other options with the wall that is mostly windows.

ANYway… The only other way I could see as an option for you would be to have the dresser on the opposite wall (maybe centered about the trunk level), and have the armoire where the dresser is. And then you could get a little table or chair or something (both?) for that 32″ space so it’s not bare. But, again, all that might be merely rearranging the awkward. I’m sure it looks fine, tho! :)

I think you have the furniture arranged nicely. however - i’m far from a decorator. have kelly come over and you two will come up with a ’smashing’ room floorplan i’m sure. hehe - i bet you could spend hours moving furniture around to get the ‘best’ fit, and it would end up just like this again!

Hi there – congrats on the new house! I work with La-Z-Boy and wanted to let you know about the room planner feature on the Web site. It’s really cool and lets you rearrange your room as many times as you want – and you can still use your graphic design skills! Good luck rearranging!

this is EXACTLY how one of the room’s in my house is laid out, and we think it works great! between the bath door and the hallway, the wall is actually dropped back about 10 feet so there is a dresser backed up against the bathroom wall, and there is a door leading outside between the armoir and the nightstand (so it’s not a solid wall). we have tried moving the furniture around a million different ways, and you’ve definitely picked the best set-up… if you’re bored with it, try rearranging anything you have on the walls (paintings, etc)…
